One of the oldest and illustrious institutions of higher education in Mizoram, Champhai College was established on 1971. With a commitment to achieve excellence in higher learning, the college has been working relentlessly for the development of the learner as well as the furtherance of social good. Prof. H.K.L. Thanga was the founder Principal of the college. The college came under the deficit-grants-in-aid system of Government of Mizoram in the year 1971 and had also been included under section 12 (B) and 2 (f) of UGC Act 1956 under the affiliation of Norht-Eastern Hills University. Subsequently, the college was provincialized in 1975 under the leadership of Prof. Thangfala Sailo, the first permanent Principal of this institution.

Located in the heart of Champhai, the college is on the east of Champhai town and well connected by road. The college has a vast green campus set in peaceful surroundings. Its verdant setting makes it an exclusive destination from the environmental and ecological point of view. About 33 numbers of bird diversity, 132 numbers of tree diversity and varieties of medicinal plants have been identified at the college campus. The college has also initiated an organic garden and a vermicompost project for promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the campus.

The College currently provides Three-Year Bachelor’s Degree (Major and Pass Course) courses to more than two hundred students every academic year. The College has four faculties – Arts, Science, Commerce and Computer Science spread over seventeen departments, viz. Mizo, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Education, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, and Zoology. The curriculum followed by the College at the Degree level is the one prescribed by Mizoram University.

In tune with its mission of delivering quality education, the college is always open to introducing new subjects and courses for the benefit of the student community. In this direction, the college, besides its regular courses, has taken the initiative to introduce a select list of Certificate, Diploma and Vocational programmes, too. Moreover, the college, under the aegis of its career counselling and guidance cell, offers career counselling and organizes different training programmes to orient its students towards the choice of an appropriate career on the basis of their skills, weaknesses, aptitudes and strengths.

Since its establishment, the college under the adroit and pioneering guardianship of eminent educationists and teachers has been successfully fulfilling the emerging needs and challenges of the times. In fact, it has been persistently trying to improvise its knowledge delivery mechanism and infrastructure. The College was assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for the first time in the year 2004. It was re-accredited for the second time in the year 2010. Most recently NAAC re-accredited the college with ‘B-Grade’ in the year 2019.

The college is committed towards growing into a center of excellence and sustaining its historical legacy to be the best by catering to all the needs of the learners, particularly those belonging to the weaker sections of the society. With such an aim in mind, the college has adopted a model village named Ruantlang as a model village for the upliftment of its people in the area of education, health, etc.

Considering the social and economic backwardness of the region, Champhai College has taken the onus of enlightening and edifying the minds of its students so that they can become exemplary citizens and contribute to the betterment of the society.
